Office of Audit Services
The Office of Audit Services provides all internal and contracted audit activities for Department programs and operations, including the National Nuclear Security Administration. The Office works as an agent for positive change and continuous improvement in the Department's management and program operations. The Office strives to provide reliable, credible financial and performance information to senior Department management, the Congress and taxpayers.
The Office of Audit Services consists of a Headquarters organization and two Divisions aligned with the Department's critical missions in national security, energy, science and environmental quality. This organizational structure helps to ensure that audit work provides comprehensive coverage over Department organizations, programs and activities, while meeting the Department's evolving needs and organizational structure changes. Audits performed fall into two broad categories: performance audits and financial audits. Performance audits provide independent assessments of an organization, program or activity.
They generally include recommendations to improve public accountability and facilitate decision-making by Department managers. Financial audits provide independent evaluations regarding the agency's financial information, internal controls and compliance with laws and regulations. The Office of Audit Services also has the capability to audit information systems operations and acquisitions, and test the vulnerability of automated systems to unauthorized intrusions.
